National Carers Strategy

National Carers Strategy : 'Carers at the heart of 21st century families and communities'

In February 2007 Gordon Brown announced that the Government would renew the National Strategy for Carers – its 10 year vision for improving support for carers. From March 2007 to January 2008 the Government undertook the largest ever consultation with carers. Carers UK also consulted widely with our members and supporters to make sure our demands for change were firmly based on carers’ views. Thousands of carers took part in events, wrote letters and sent emails, giving views on what needs to change.

We captured all these contributions in our report Carers’ Voices. more...

The Strategy was shaped by a number of  task forces that included civil servants, representatives from carers’ organisations, employers and a range of experts who work with carers. Carers UK was represented on each of the taskforces. The taskforces submitted recommendations to Ministers which included short term, medium term and long term measures. Ministers then made decisions on what would be in the final Strategy.

The Strategy was launched by the Prime Minister in June 2008 and is titled 'Carers at the heart of 21st century families and communities'. It includes a set of commitments and a ten year vision for what support for carers should be like by 2018.

The Strategy is available to download from the Department of Health's website. more...
