What has the campaign done so far?
2007
- May : We publish hard evidence of the impact caring has on your finances. Our research 'Real Change not Short Change' is based on the real lives of over 3,000 carers. We launch a postcard campaign so carers can send a message to Gordon Brown.
- Nov : Carers deliver over 8,000 of your postcards and messages to Number 10 Downing Street.
2008
- January to March : As part of the National Strategy for Carers income task group, we lobby for major changes to carer benefits. The task group recommend a billion package of improvements to carer's benefits but government reject this in favour of further review.
- June : Whilst disappointed the National Strategy for Carers has rejected immediate improvements, we acknowledge and welcome a government pledge to end financial hardship for carers by 2018.
- August : We present evidence to the Work and Pensions Select Committee on Carers. This influential cross-party group of MP's decide that the carers benefits system is 'outdated' and call for it to be replaced.
- November : We published new research showing how the recession is hitting carers especially hard.
- December : We organise a Parliamentary lobby of MP's to keep the pressure up.
2009
- April : Lent our backing to carer-led poverty protests in London and Edinburgh
- May : Launched a poverty charter to show the broad base of support for this issue.
- Oct : Daily Mirror back the charter
- Nov : Charter is handed over to Number Ten and to the main political parties
