Main Content: Protest : update from the carer poverty protest group

A group of carers angry at the continued lack of improvements to carers’ benefits are organising a day of protests. On April 22nd 2009 protests will take place in Edinburgh and London.

Edinburgh

Where : Meet at Edinburgh Castle then walking right down the Royal Mile to Holyrood led by a pipe band (subject to police approval)

When : 1 pm on Wednesday April 22nd 2009.

People who are unable to march can join outside the Scottish Parliament from around 1.45 pm.

To help get noticed they’re asking everyone to wear something tartan and bring placards and banners.

Following the march a rally will be held outside the Scottish Parliament with celebrity speakers, followed by a lobby of MSPs.

London

The government will be announcing it's budget on April 22nd - the same day as the protest. Because of this the venue has had to be changed as the national press and media will be using Old Palace Yard, which belongs to the Palace of Westminster. Instead the protest will  be gathering in Upper Trafalgar Square, on the North Terrace outside the National Portrait Gallery.

Then 10 organised groups, of around 20 people each, will walk down Whitehall to the East Footway of Parliament Square. Banners must be furled for the walk, but unfurled upon arrival. From there, a smaller group will proceed to Downing Street to handover a petition. These  groups will then return to Trafalgar Square to rejoin the main Rally.

Where : Upper Trafalgar Square, on the North Terrace outside the National Portrait Gallery.
When : 11am – 2.30pm on Wednesday 22nd April 2009
